Bathrooms in Dementia Care Homes – The Challenges

Bathroom can in dementia care homes can present several challenges for a person with dementia, given they are likely to have problems with their memory or working out what things are.

When designing a Bathroom for a care facility avoid a sterile appearance that is pale and where it is hard to see things. People with dementia must be able to see what they need to use, because they may not remember easily.

Toilets and exits must be easy to find. Hang door signs not only on the outside but on the inside at the right height for a person with dementia and make them visible from as many viewpoints as possible

Where possible, the wall and floor should be in contrasting colours. Use coloured grab rails, surround frames and raised toilet seats to help adapt your existing bathroom area and minimise falls.

By using highly visible and high contrast colour a clear route to the toilet can be established and what is important, grab rails and the toilet itself, easier to see. This boosts confidence and independence as well as helping to maintain or restore dignity.

The Use of Mirrors

The glare and reflection from a mirror can often cause confusion for a person with dementia. If this is the case, consider removing mirrors but if this is not practical try implementing reversible mirrors that can be adapted to everyone’s needs.
