Residents in care homes are often frail and elderly and may suffer from neurological impairments such as dementia, resulting in them being unable to recognise the risk of harm associated with accessing unsafe and unfamiliar external areas.

To assist staff in restricting access to potentially unsafe areas, such as exit doors, Find has produced light enabling vinyl, that is specifically designed to disguise desired areas without blocking out light.

Creating a safe environment in care homes for dementia residents

Below are some examples at Clarendon Mews Care Home, Tonbridge Cottage Hospital and Roseworth Lodge, that have proven successful when used in the glass panels of their exit doors. This allowed for a natural view, but gave the appearance of shrubbery, hedging and railings directly behind the door. This acts as a deterrent to the resident trying to open the emergency exit and setting off disorientating alarms, causing stressful situations that require de-escalation. They also enhanced the environment.

Creating privacy in a hospital setting for dementia patients

Hengoed Hospital installed bespoke vinyl on the lower windows in a seating area on a mental health unit to create a relaxed environment for patients to socially interact. The shrubbery scene provided a natural barrier which stopped patients walking into the glass, it also created a visually pleasing seating area.

The bespoke vinyl is so versatile that it can be used to cover lower glass panels in windows acting as an attractive privacy curtain, hide an unsightly roof and give patients a pleasant view while create a calming environment.
